Teaching The End of Print
Nicholas Negroponte’s prediction earlier this month that the physical book will be dead in 5 years set off a global debate, and created an internet meme out of predictions that “The…is Dead.”
Of course, print isn’t dead, and probably will never entirely be gone. However, its cultural centrality has diminished and continues to move to the periphery. So it’s fitting that a course taught at CUNY by C.W. Anderson is aiming to explore what the culture of print has contributed to the advancement of our intellectual lives. Anderson’s syllabus has been reprinted in The Atlantic, and a piece featured by Kent Anderson on The Scholarly Kitchen provides a great breakdown of the current prognosis for print books, post Negroponte.
